    Who was Claude Joseph Vernet?

    Claude Joseph Vernet (1714–1789) was a prominent French artist and one of the most highly regarded landscape and marine painters of the 18th century. Born in Avignon, Vernet was educated in Italy, where he was influenced by the dramatic light and compositions of Baroque artists, which came to characterize his style.

    Vernet is particularly known for his atmospheric and detailed marine scenes and landscapes, often depicting stormy seas, harbors, and picturesque coastal areas.
